Senior Manager, Systems Engineering

Primary Job Function

Lead and organize the Systems Engineering Group to support the business in the design and development of life science analytical, in vitro diagnostic and medical instrumentation, ranging from components and sub-systems to complex standalone workstations.  Serves as a “hands-on” manager to ensure timely accomplishment of goals and project milestones.  Lead the systems engineering group in a functional matrix organization to support multiple component and instrument projects in parallel.

Functional competencies of the group include systems architecture design / requirements engineering / systems integration / error budgeting / risk management / characterization testing / life-cycle management / root cause analysis. Technical competencies of the group include the architecture design and integration of instrumentation consisting of mechanical, electrical, optical, fluidic, microfluidic, robotic/mechatronic motion control, consumable, and software/firmware design elements

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Line management for members of the systems engineering group, including contractors.
  • Presents and explains engineering concepts, results, and progress to customers
  • Develop and keep the Systems Engineering standards on a best-in-class level thus system-, product-, module- and technology requirements fulfil the R&D-charter and the business needs.
  • Develop, train and maintain Systems Engineering related processes, methods, and technologies in cooperation with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ownership of system perspective and identification of synergies between local engineering functions and global competence groups in close cooperation with the respective group leaders.
  • Coordinate systems engineering tasks between multiple product development projects
  • Technical Lead of the Systems Engineering Group, supporting the organization with the competencies needed in the design and development of complex medical/IVD workstations and components
  • Lead the Systems Engineering Group’s support throughout the product development process in a cross-functional team environment, including Marketing, QARA, Supply Chain, Operations, and other R&D functions, locally and, as needed, globally.
  • Assume technical leadership in cross-functional teams for components or instrument design and development.  
  • Prepare and assess error budgets and architecture proposals as a base for project decisions.
  • Drive make or buy decisions considering off-the-shelf or 3rd party components.
  • Prepare and moderate workshops with identified stakeholders for technical solution decision finding.
  • Analyse and describe fully integrated IVD systems regarding their architecture and specification decomposition, interfaces and performance.
  • Drive Requirements Engineering, deriving system-level requirements from user-level requirements or sub-system level requirements from higher-level requirements.
  • Own the Risk Management File (ISO 14971).
  • Secure common interface definition and re-usability of modules and components.
  • Develop and maintain basic competence matrix and define contact persons in cooperation with all Subject Matter Experts.
  • Define necessary standards, guidelines and other competence group related documents to achieve TECANs quality regulations, international standards and regulations.
  • Provide actively interdepartmental information and reporting flow to all relevant levels. Communicate the status of the overall Competence Group development to the team and relevant stakeholders.
  • Invite to circular meetings for the Competence Group to promote and motivate information exchange and deliver solution-oriented outlook.
  • Drive and support Innovation initiatives
  • Drive project teams conceptually in technical design reviews, technology usage and effort estimations.
  • Consult Line Managers in recruiting of competence group associated team members.
  • Define and maintain turnkey and technology supplier portfolio in cooperation with External Services
  • Write and submit intellectual property

  • Represent the subject matter expertise in the field of mechanical engineering, ensuring the highest standards in quality, customer service and, as needed, regulatory compliance are met
  • Erroneous decisions or recommendations would typically result in failure to achieve critical organizational objectives and affect the image of the organization’s technological capability
  • Anticipates challenges and creatively applies knowledge of concepts, principles and theories

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Engineering or related field with 6 years of relevant product development experience
    MS in Engineering or related field with 8 years of relevant product development experience
    BS in Engineering or related field with 10 years of relevant product development experience
  • The ability to communicate technological concepts and progress to customers is essential.
  • Proven ability to innovate with a history of successful new or improved product releases
  • Listens and understands others’ points of view and articulates tactfully and respectfully one’s own perspective orally, in writing, and in presentations
  • Expert in working with ISO and MIL standards related to optical and mechanical engineering
  • Works well with other engineering functions in a collaborative, fast paced goal-driven environment
  • Proven knowledge in mechanical and Robotics/Mechatronics principles, practices and procedures
  • Technical background in healthcare products, laboratory diagnostics, IVDs, genomic sequencing, or medical devices


Preferred Qualifications

  • 15 years engineering experience in the life science or medical instrumentation industry
  • Advanced degree preferred
  • Experience working in a start-up environment is advantageous
  • Experience with optical instrumentation development
  • Track record of working with external component manufacturers to design, launch and improve vendor sub-systems used in production
  • Proficiency in engineering tools such as Matlab and LabView is highly desirable
  • PhD in Physics, Biomedical Engineering, or related field
