Senior Electrical Engineer (PD)
What you will do
As a Sr. Electrical Engineer within Tecan's Product Development Team, you will lead the design, development and systems integration of electrical sub-systems for life science instrumentation, diagnostic tools and point-of-care devices, as well as their associated consumables/cartridges. The Electrical Engineering Group owns several critical aspects of every project such electrical system architecture, circuit design, PCBA layout, component selection (displays, power supplies, sensors, etc.), harnesses, assembly, test and debug.
Responsibilities will include
- Lead the development of electrical systems and sub-systems for life science instrumentation, diagnostic tools and point-of-care devices
- Analyze existing product requirements and specifications. Generate additional requirements and specifications, as needed
- Lead or participate in concept and architecture development activities as well as PCBA design reviews, board bring-up, integration, test, debug and verification activities
- Ensure that all requirements and specifications are being met and that all electrical systems, sub-systems and components are being designed or selected for performance, reliability, cost, manufacturability and serviceability
- Work closely with FW Engineers to help define FW architecture and facilitate integration/testing
- Serve as an individual contributor to projects, as needed, by capturing requirements, defining system architecture, creating block diagrams and schematics, performing simulations, building breadboards, creating test plans, writing test protocols and driving systems integration efforts
- Serve as a mentor and advisor to more junior Electrical/Electronics Engineers
What you bring along
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 7 years of relevant industry experience in life science instrumentation or diagnostic/medical device development
- Contributed significantly to the design and development of custom PCBAs for at least two life science instruments or diagnostic devices, from feasibility through manufacturing
- A solid understanding of physics and electrical engineering fundamentals
- Proficiency with major commercial schematic capture and layout tools (Altium preferred)
- Proficiency with integrated circuit simulation and analysis via SPICE, MATLAB, Simulink or similar tools
- Experience with design control under ISO 9001/13485 and knowledge of IEC 60601/62304 standards
- Knowledge of GD&T as it applies to PCBs and PCBAs
- Proficiency with test and measurement equipment such as multi-meters, oscilloscopes, function generators and spectrum analyzers as well as professional grade hand tools for rework and crimping
- Experience with analog circuit design (low noise, high bandwidth, low drift, etc.), data acquisition circuits and digital circuits
- Experience with selecting and implementation of microcontrollers such as PIC and ARM
Must have demonstrated proficiency in PCBA design and development in at least three of the following areas, in the context of life science/biotech/biomedical device development:
- Motion control systems utilizing stepper and BLDC motors, servos and solenoids
- Fluidic control systems utilizing pumps, valves, regulators, flow meters, etc.
- Thermal control systems utilizing TECs and resistive heaters and thermistors/thermocouples/RTDs
- Optical systems consisting of lasers, LEDs, detectors (CMOS/CCD/MPPC/PMT) and auto-focusing systems
- Wireless communication using RFID, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G/4G
