Senior Buyer

What you will do

Under limited supervision, acquires and administers an optimum balance of cost, quality and supplier service, materials and services necessary to meet the objectives of the company.  Plans and performs broad assignments involving the purchase of critical items, large dollar (e.g. capital equipment) and large volume purchases. 


Responsibilities will include

  • Perform deep-dive analysis on planned activities for medium to high-complexity and value production materials and commodities.  Make decisions within established guidelines with respect to optimum purchase quantity and price based on analysis vs. MRP/ERP planning proposals.
  • Work with Planners, Production Supervisor and operations management to expedite materials to meet customer demand with minimal expediting fees.
  • Member of Change Control Board and is responsible for communicating upcoming changes to  suppliers and ensuring that suppliers are able to meet new requirements.  Must be able to work with design engineers and the suppliers to resolve issues when suppliers are unable to meet change requirements.
  • Conduct and document procurement activities and negotiations to support prudent buying decisions and protect Tecan from price increases and other liabilities.
  • Gain familiarity with raw materials in order to provide data that could lead to the possible use of alternative materials, methods or specifications.
  • Actively drive costs down by continually benchmarking existing and staying apprised of market conditions, economic and industry situations as they affect the purchase of materials.
  • Expedites materials as needed to meet customer demands with minimal expediting fees.
  • Responsible for decisions on purchasing quantities at the best price and lowest financial risk.
  • Responsible for monitoring inventory levels and working with Materials Manager for any slow moving parts identified.  Determine the best/correct course of action. 
  • Participates in Material Review Board Meetings to review non-conforming materials and make decisions on any corrective actions which may include participating in supplier audits.
  • Work with suppliers to improve low performance and drives closure of corrective action items.  Responsible for researching and identifying alternative suppliers if supplier performance does not improve.
  • Responsible for processing non-conforming material and ensuring suppliers issue credits when non-conformance is determined to be caused by the supplier.
  • Responsible for filing and archiving purchasing records and activities per established procedures.
  • Assist in the development of strategic supplier relationships.
  • Participates in planning and improvement activities in the Purchasing Department.
  • Generate effective communication, good relations and a positive, service-oriented image with coworkers.  Promote courtesy, objectivity and fairness.
  • Follow established policies and procedures that assure compliance with Tecan policies and the Quality System, industry standards, UCC, General Accounting Principles, Federal, State and local laws, FDA Good Manufacturing Practices and applicable ISO standards.



What you bring along

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business or technical field, or equivalent work experience required.
  • Minimum five to seven years of experience in large volume procurement, planning or manufacturing engineering.
  • Experience in MRPII and JIT required.
  • NPI buying experience helpful.
  • Experience in purchasing electronic, custom molded plastic, fabricated components and custom assemblies required.
  • NAPM (CPM) or APICS (CPIM) certification preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and engineering specifications preferred.
  • Experience in International purchasing helpful.
  • Computer proficiency in a Microsoft Office environment required.
  • SAP experience a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under time-sensitive and cost pressures.
  • Strong track record of negotiating skills and/or cost savings activities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be professional and discreet with a track record of making good business decisions with a minimal amount of supervision.
