Liquid Handling Application Team Manager, West

What you will do

The Liquid Handling Application Team Manager position will be working managers as they provide both application support for the Liquid Handling platform sales organization within an assigned region and also manage a team of Application Scientists.  This person will be the technical resource to assist and support the sales team. An application solution is defined as a combination of biology, software, scripted protocols and hardware that target a specific application. These application solutions could include instrument and reagent components from one or more Tecan Business Units or with third party vendors. The person in this position will act as an expert and knowledge source for the Tecan sales team.


Responsibilities will include

  • Be a technical expert within the Liquid Handling automation field, providing specific application expertise to gain customer confidence during the pre- and post-sales process. 
  • Encourage the sales team to shift focus from product features to the customer’s application through coaching and continuing education.
  • Delivers market input on current  “hot applications” including trends seen at customers
  • Responsible for all aspects of the applications sale, from pre-sale support, including application analysis, solution design and configuration, instrument demonstration, through to installation and providing higher level complexity post sale support.
  • Maintain up-to-date references of local Liquid Handling platform customers to be disseminated to Sales team as needed.
  • Provide applications support and training for members of the service organization.
  • Work directly with Liquid Handling applications and product management to ensure excellent flow of information from both the field and customers to product management and back again
  • Participation in marketing and sales meetings at Tecan sites when appropriate.
  • Collect and maintain up-to-date competitive and market information to disseminate to the sales force as well as the marketing and manufacturing sites.
  • Involvement in marketing activities, including but not limited to, conference attendance, support of collaboration partners, provide technical content for marketing material
  • Keep abreast of scientific literature and maintaining an awareness of new technologies and techniques

Your main management tasks:

  • Supervise Application Scientists in a designated region. Responsible for coaching, training and development of the team members.  
  • Responsible for the development of new Application Scientists as needed
  • Co-ordinate support for Sales Staff and where appropriate FAE’s with the Regional Sales Managers and Service Managers as required. 
  • Work with Sales and Service to provide appropriate levels of support to key accounts. 
  • Assist in the continuous evaluation of new corporate partners, key accounts, and technologies needed to further advance sales



What you bring along

  • BSc, MSc, or PhD, in one of the following fields; Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or Microbiology.
  • Minimum 5 years relevant liquid handling and automation experience gained within an academic or industry setting including writing automation applications in instrument native language or software 
  • Must have the interest and desire to lead people, previous management experience is a plus but not a requirement as full training will be given. Must have the ability to communicate with and understand the needs of both internal and external customers, and recognize and manage potential problem areas and resolve them with integrity.
  • Ability to communicate with and understand the needs of internal and external clients
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to put ideas across
  • Ability to mesh well with the existing management team by being a good listener, a team builder and an articulate advocate of the vision
  • Ability to work well under pressure, to multi-task
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills are essential.
